What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a means by which to train your brain.  In doing so, your brain learns to naturally function more efficiently.  During Neurofeedback, we will observe your brain function in real-time. Through software, you are rewarded when your brain waves change into more effective patterns. Over time, your brain naturally learns to function more appropriately. This is of key importance, because ones brain learns to function more effectively over time without the need for any drugs or supplements.

This has been shown to be effective with ADD, hyperactivity, learning disabilities, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, insomnia, restless legs, autism spectrum disorder, Asperger's, OCD, head injuries and concussions, headaches/migraines, substance abuse and alcoholism, PTSD, fibromyalgia or chronic pain, IBS, stroke, and uncontrolled epilepsy.

Is neurofeedback safe?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive technique, non-drug included, which helps a person learn how to control, or self-regulate, their brain waves. The headset is simply used to listen to and record the brainwaves, it doesn’t transmit or otherwise change anything in the brain. Through the process of simply wearing the headset and playing the games, the brain will teach itself to better regulate its activities. It is especially helpful for people who are non-responsive to drug treatments or who have adverse effects.

Can neurofeedback cause negative effects?

Mild side effects can sometimes occur during neurofeedback training, such as you may feel fatigued, spacey, anxious, experience a headache, have difficulty falling asleep, or feel irritable.  These side effects may occur if a training session is too long. These feelings usually pass within a short time after a training session. 
 
If you're experiencing a side effect, you should tell your trainer about this, where training protocols can be altered.

How frequently are neurofeedback sessions done?

Neurofeedback should be done at least once a week, and preferably twice weekly.  When persons are traveling from long distances we can sometimes do neurofeedback twice in a day.

How successful is neurofeedback treatment?

Most follow-up research has commonly found that about 70-80% of the time significant improvements occur.

How will playing games or watching movies help improve focus?

Accepted Answer

Video games and regular movies are chosen, because the ability to focus on them is a useful tool druing training. They are fun for everyone, from childhood up to adult, and training participants are generally very cooperative with training. The training occurs on a neurological level that is not related to the content of the video game or movie. Just like being at the gym does not make you stronger, you have to actually do exercises to improve. Regular video games or movies without the appropriate technology will not improve attention.
